Yoga is Beyond Exercise

(Yoga is the Sanskrit word for Union )

In yogic philosophy, it is believed that we all have a solar and lunar side. Optimal health is achieved when these are in balance. Hatha Yoga simply means the union of Ha – Sun and Tha – Moon.

Yoga is much more involved then just the Physical Asanas (postures). They are only the third of eight principles. These Eight Principles are also called Ashtanga Yoga (Sanskrit).

1 st Yama’s – Moral Principles

2 nd Niyama’s – Personal Practices

3 rd Hatha Yoga – Asana (Postures)

4 th Pranayama – Breath Control

5 th Pratyahara – Sensory Control

6 th Dharana – Concentration

7 th Dhyana – Meditation

8 th Samadhi - Union

Western Medicine has found evidence supporting that Yoga Asanas (postures) can help with many conditions and chronic diseases. It does this by engaging the Para Sympathetic nervous system (Lunar) which relaxes the body and allows it to reconstruct itself. During our hectic lifestyle, our Sympathetic (fight or flight) Nervous system (Solar) is engaged. It has been proven that this stressful situation causes our body to deteriorate at a rapid speed, leaving us prone to such devastating conditions as cancers, MS, chronic fatigue and obesity.

Other conditions which yoga can help releive:

Anxiety
Asthma
Back pain
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Colds and flu
Constipation
Depression
Diabetes Mellitus
Epilepsy
Fatigue
Fibromyalgia
Frustration and irritation
Headache
Hypertension
Immune system disorders
Insomnia
Menstrual cramps and PMS
Reproductive / sexual dysfunction
Sciatica
Stomachache and indigestion
Vertigo and dizziness
